Dr. Millett restored the quality of my life. I consider him the epitome of a medical professional. He is extremely competent, highly knowledgeable, committed to his
field, and ethical.
My saga started with an ACL repair, following a skiing accident, in 2004. The repair resulted in a stiff, painful knee which did not bend or extend normally and
which severely limited my life. I had been a competitive horseback rider and a diehard skier. I was unable to do more than walk about 100 yards, and that with
great pain. I had to limit my work hours because of the pain. I was absolutely miserable and feared that my life as I had known it was over. The original surgeon
who performed the repair assured me that things would get better with continued "hard work", but this was not the case.
There is never a good time for an accident. My husband and I were in the middle of purchasing a small farm, our life-long dream, but had not yet sold our house.
Therefore we were holding two mortgages at a time when I couldn't work to full capacity. I wasn't even sure I wanted the farm anymore, given my fear that I would be
unable to ride or do chores in the future. It was an extraordinarily stressful time and I became quite depressed.
After eight months of suffering and seeing no real improvement, I searched the Internet for information about what might be going on. I found a wonderful website at
Kneeguru.uk.co and concluded, after much reading, that I was probably suffering from arthrofibrosis, a condition highly associated with ACL surgery and with
immobilization, both of which I had received. It is essentially the formation of scar tissue within and sometimes outside the joint capsule. It severely limits
mobility and results in pain and alteration of the normal biomechanics of the knee. The web site referred me to specialists for this condition and I chose Dr.
Millett as I had read his journal articles and was able to commute to the hospital.
I was terrified to have another surgery, given the disastrous results of the first one, but I also knew I could not live with the level of disability I had. Dr.
Millett suggested that I would benefit from a surgery where the scar tissue would be removed, followed by extensive physical therapy. He patiently answered my many
questions about the procedure.
I spent three days in the hospital and was far more comfortable than I had been with the ACL repair. Two weeks after the surgery I was walking to get to my
appointment. This is something I could not have done previously. I spent time in physical therapy and was able to ride again that summer. By the following winter
I was back on skis.
I am thrilled to state that I have been hired as a ski instructor this year and that I competed in a dressage show, placing second, this summer. I am riding again
without any pain and skiing as a professional! I never thought this would be possible and it would not have been possible without Dr. Millett's knowledge and help.
I believe that I would have progressed to permanent disability without his intervention.
I am therefore forever grateful to Dr. Millett for giving me my life back!
